Overview
A Browse for information allows you to view your search results, as well as those records that come before and after your results. If you wish to view information related to your search, or if you are unsure of an author's name or an item's exact call number, a Browse is most effective.
A Search in MadCat allows you to view only the information for which you searched. If you are looking for a known title, a Search is most efficient.
Browse
If you are unsure of an author's name or an item's call number, you may browse a list of possible headings. The Browse feature is available for Author, Subject and Call Number. Type as much of the name, subject, or call number as you wish or know.
To perform an Author Browse for plays by Tennessee Williams
, for example:
- Select the Basic Search mode
- Highlight Author Browse in the Search By: dropdown menu
- Type
williams tenn
The results page will indicate you are "Displaying 1 through 25 of 25 entries". This message is misleading, because you may click the Previous or Next arrows to browse MadCat's complete author index.
When you find the author name you are searching for, click on the name to view the list of records associated with that author.
Note: You cannot set limits with the Browse feature.
Search
Unlike Browse, a MadCat Search retrieves a set number of results (based on your search terms). Searching is available for Title, Journal Title, ISBN, Call Number, etc.To perform a Title search for the book Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil
