Punctuation
It is not necessary to use punctuation. All of the following searches would work:
african american
african-american
dickens, charles
dickens charles
marys
mary's
Call Numbers and Punctuation
Use a period in Library of Congress call numbers if one appears in the classification part of the number:
f 1053.2
In Library of Congress and National Library of Medicine call numbers, if more than one letter/number combination appears after the classification part of the number, leave a space before the second letter. Leave a space before a date designation:
z 695.1 g43 g46 1994
